The Violence Prevention Conference focuses on giving student affairs practitioners the tools to effectively address violence on campus through a variety of integrative approaches.


Recent tragic events on college campuses and the passage of the Campus SaVE Act highlight the need for a conference focused on violence prevention strategies for college and university campuses. Sexual assault and violence cause immeasurable harms; some public, some private; some personal, some institutional; but all are an intolerable break from the purpose, mission, and values of higher education. Creating a safer campus involves prevention education, timely and appropriate response to violent events, support for victims of violence, and accountability for perpetrators. The Violence Prevention Conference, which occurs simultaneously with the 2015 NASPA Alcohol, Other Drug, and Violence Prevention Conference and the 2015 NASPA Mental Health Conference, focuses on giving student affairs practitioners the tools to effectively address violence on campus through a variety of integrative approaches.

Attend this conference to:

  • Identify practices for campus policies addressing violence including sexual assault and sexual harassment;
  • Interpret policy and evaluate best practices for compliance and implementation.
  • Define replicable and adaptable campus infrastructures for the implementation of evidence-based practices to prevent and address violence;
  • Discover and compare strategies to increase prevention programming and improve campus response to violence and victims;
  • Explore ways in which violence prevention intersects with both mental health and substance abuse on campus to develop and enhance prevention, intervention and response.

NASPA is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. Sessions or programs for which NBCC-approved clock hours will be awarded are identified in the program book. The ACEP™ is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Participants can receive a maximum of 14.75 clock hours. Up to 6 additional clock hours are available for attending pre-conference workshops.

Call for Programs

The call for programs for the 2015 NASPA Violence Prevention Conference is now closed.

The conference planning committee is seeking proposals that enhance and progress the field of violence prevention on college campuses.  Presenters will be asked to identify the intended audience for their session; beginner, intermediate and advanced. Additionally, the conference planning committee will select programs based upon the programs' relationship to the conference themes and learning outcomes.  Special consideration will be given to programs that address integrative approaches.

Conference Themes & Suggested Topics

  • Effective and Innovative Prevention Strategies

    • How are you engaging faculty, staff, and the broader community in violence prevention?
    • How has your campus developed and implemented bystander intervention trainings?
    • What innovative programs and/or services have been created on your campus to create a safer environment and encourage respect for others?
    • What are the environmental elements that enable sexual violence and how can campuses address these elements?
    • How has your campus addressed the use of technology for cyber bullying, harassment, and online violence?
    • How are you involving men in violence prevention?
    • How are you implementing inclusive prevention strategies?
    • How has your campus responded to student activism to decrease violence on campus?

  • Infrastructure and Policy Development

    • What process did your institution utilize to develop policies that comply with federal regulations? How are you ensuring that campus members are aware of and understand these policies?

    • What is your campus doing to meet the requirements of Title IX, the Cleary Act, and the Campus SaVE Act?
    • How are you meeting the requirements to provide bystander intervention training to students and employees?
    • What methods are you using to collect data for reporting on violence? How are you using this data to evaluate and improve programs?

  • Responding to Sexual Violence

    • How are you training frontline or first responders to address reports of sexual harassment and sexual violence to support and respond to victims appropriately?
    • How does your campus ensure adequate, prompt, reliable, and impartial investigations of reported sexual harassment/violence?

  • Mental Health, Violence Prevention, and Substance Abuse: The intersection of violence prevention and both mental health and substance abuse

    • What programs are used on your campus to treat and support students with multiple mental health and/or alcohol and other drug problems?

Pre-conference workshops at the 2015 NASPA Violence Prevention Conference are shared with the 2015 NASPA Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Conference and the 2015 NASPA Mental Health Conference. There is an additional registration fee to attend pre-conference workshops and they may be added to your conference registration at any time. At this time, if you know you will attend a pre-conference workshop, please register for the generic pre-conference workshop through our registration system. Building on the successes of the 2013 Symposium in New York and the 2014 Symposium in Chicago, the 2015 BASICS Symposium will be held in conjunction with the NASPA Alcohol and Other Drugs Abuse Prevention Conference.  The symposium is geared toward those who have experience and training in managing or overseeing BASICS programs.  There continues to be a benefit for campuses using BASICS to come together to share lessons learned, present updates on ongoing research, develop strategies for evaluating efforts, and more.  This symposium will help facilitate dialogue and advance our work.  The symposium will consist of panel presentations and small group discussions addressing how to manage and oversee BASICS.  Networking opportunities will also be provided.

The goals for the symposium are:

  • Identify applicable adaptations related to BASICS

  • Discuss training and staffing models for managing BASICS

  • Apply assessment and evaluation strategies to measure effectiveness of BASICS

  • Discuss strategies to utilize BASICS for other substances, including marijuana and other drugs

  • Explain non-disciplinary approaches to use BASICS

  • Demonstrate knowledge of online system management tools related to BASICS

  • Apply strategies for working with special or higher-risk populations beyond the BASICS paradigm

  • Discuss funding and management strategies to sustain the long-term viability of BASICS on campus

  • Meet other practitioners to increase professional network

  • Challenge status quo of your BASICS program and of your campus for national change

Targeting Wellness and Health Promotion Directors (WHPD), this pre-conference workshop and the corresponding tracked sessions will provide an opportunity for primary leaders of campus health promotion and wellness efforts to use the “Ottawa Charter on Health Promotion,” the “Institute of Medicine Prevention Protractor,” and other foundational tools to increase knowledge and understanding of effective and innovative primary prevention and wellness strategies and the organizational models needed to support risk reduction and wellness enhancement, from a prevention perspective.

The participants will be able to:

  1. Utilize varying sources and types of data to drive the conversations, collaborations, and priorities on your campus

  2. Identify specific collaborations critical for broadening responsibility for health, prevention, and wellness initiatives

  3. Interpret population specific data and peer-reviewed literature to guide their health promotion, prevention, and wellness departments

  4. Provide examples of campuses using evidence-based (informed) practice as a cornerstone of their primary prevention programs

  5. Apply standards in service evaluation, strategic planning, resource allocation, and program infrastructure assessment

  6. Articulate the paradigms, opportunities and challenges inherent with both student development and public health professionals on staff 

Specifically, we plan to use the Saturday time (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) to network and share resources followed by a focused discussion around the climate survey as referenced in the Not Alone:  The First Report of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault distributed April 2014.

On Sunday morning, January 11, we hope to host a panel of vice presidents for student life to follow our guided discussion from Saturday.  As a result of a visiting vice president last year at this meeting, many directors recognized that it would be very helpful to engage several vice presidents if possible at our meeting this year.

This pre-conference will bring attorneys and higher education professionals from the Victim Rights Law Center and the Clery Center for Security On Campus to provide easy-to-use, practical implementation tools for proactively moving forward with new policies and procedures to address campus gender-based violence, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.  These tools will help campuses implement the guidance and best practices recently generated by U.S. Department of Education and White House Task Force materials, the recent amendments to the Clery Act as a part of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization, and the intersections of compliance between the Clery Act and Title IX. 


The participants will learn to:

  • Review Clery Act and Title IX requirements regarding sexual violence education and response

  • Highlight intersections between the two laws

  • Map simultaneous requirements of each federal law

  • Discuss participants’ concerns regarding potentially conflicting requirements of each law

  • Provide resources for accessing information already available and for staying aware of new laws, changes, and best practices

The 460,000 student-athletes participating in NCAA governed intercollegiate athletics programs at over 1000 four-year colleges experience similar developmental and health and wellness challenges as other students, but within the unique challenges and stressors of the intercollegiate athletics environment.  This workshop identifies strategies for effective collaboration and partnerships with athletics to prevent substance abuse and interpersonal violence and promote mental health.  Specific evidence-based programming recommendations addressing these student-athlete issues – from individual, team and environmental perspectives - will be thoroughly reviewed.

With marijuana legalized for recreational purposes two years ago in Washington and Colorado, and with similar measures passing in Oregon, Alaska, and Washington, DC, having significant implications for college campuses in these states.  Further, as other states potentially consider similar measures in the future and as national discourse continues regarding legality, benefits, and costs of marijuana, college students in general may be receiving mixed messages about marijuana’s legality, increasingly sensing lower perceived risk for initiating and/or using marijuana, or concluding that marijuana is “safe”).  In this pre-conference, presenters will discuss what student affairs and student life professionals need to know as they approach public health messaging, prevention, and intervention efforts.  Presenters will talk about the science surrounding motives for use and the implications for skills training, counseling centers, and health centers.   The current state of the science on prevention and intervention efforts, as well as lessons learned thus far in Washington with implications for participants’ campuses will be discussed.

Registration as a member is based on individual membership status. If you are employed by a college or university that is an institutional member, you can join as an individual member at the $75 rate. This gives you the conference registration and a year of membership for less than the non-member registration fee.  If your institution is NOT a member, then you will need to join at the associate affiliate rate of $242 and then you can pay the individual member rate for conference registration.  Visit the Membership section of the NASPA website to learn about membership types.

Group Registration: 

NASPA offers discounts for attendees registering in groups of two or more individuals. In order to receive this discount, please contact NASPA at [email protected] prior to completing the registration process. Please include the following information in your email:

  •  Your name, title, and institution

  • The conference name for which you would like to receive the discount

  • The number of people in your group.

Our membership department will contact you once they've received this information.

Please note:  In order to receive the discount group rate, each registrant must have an active NASPA individual membership and register after the discount code has been granted.

Group of (2)- $10 discount per registration

Group of (3) or more- $20 discount per registration 

Purchase Orders: 
Purchase orders will NOT be accepted for registration. There is now a Bill Me option online if you need to submit paperwork to your accounting office to have a check cut for your registration payment. Please use that option when registering online.

Cancellation Policy:
Refunds will be given for cancellations, received in writing by December 15, 2014, less a $50.00 processing fee. In addition, a processing fee of $50.00 per registration will be charged for credit cards declined.  We are unable to change payment methods after the initial payment is processed. With prior approval, anyone registered but who cannot attend may send a substitute. Substitution information must come in writing from the registered participant. The membership status of the substitute must be the same as the registrant in order to have the same registration fee applied. Additional charges may apply if the membership status is not the same. The conference may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, registration fees will be refunded; however, NASPA will not be responsible for additional costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, and/or travel agencies.  NASPA is not responsible for weather-related travel delays or other issues in regard to personal travel and no refunds will be given due to these occurrences.
