San Diego State University - San Diego, California

The 2018 NASPA Escaleras Institute – Latinx/a/o Student Affairs Professionals Scaling New Heights in Leadership is designed for Latinx/a/o student affairs professionals who aspire to senior student affairs officer roles, including the cabinet-level vice president for student affairs position at colleges and universities.  The Institute is appropriate for emerging Latinx/a/o leaders in assistant/associate director, director, assistant/associate dean, dean, and AVP roles.  This three-day, cohort-based institute offers an intensive, challenging, and collegial learning environment for Latinx/a/o student affairs professionals as they develop culturally relevant leadership skills that leverage their unique ethnic heritages and histories.

Institute Applications will be open until June 1, 2018

About

With the burgeoning population of Latinx/a/o students entering colleges and universities, the lack of higher education professionals serving as senior student affairs officers or vice presidents for student affairs who serve as role models and mentors has profoundly affected and will continue to impact the long-term prospects for Latino student success.

Escaleras participants will learn core competencies, knowledge, skills, experiences, and abilities that are germane to assuming higher education leadership positions from current Latinx/a/o higher education and student affairs leaders. Participants will build essential senior student affairs officers and vice president for student affairs competencies with a cohort of Latinx/a/o higher education professionals who are dedicated to leading in a vibrant, diverse, global, and socially-just higher education environment.

About the Institute Model

In this cohort-based institute model, Escaleras participants will focus on the current research on Latinx/a/os in higher education leadership and, the pipeline and pathway to educational administration, as well as challenges and opportunities in leading as a Latinx/a/o at institutions of higher learning. To facilitate learning and appropriate enrichment, participants will be grouped in one of two tracks depending on their current functional level, vice presidents, and mid level managers. Institute participants are expected to engage fully in all aspects of the Institute, including meals and Institute activities.

This professional development opportunity is designed for self-identified Latinx/a/o student affairs professionals with three or more years of experience in higher education. The application process includes completing an online application and submitting a current CV/resume.

Registration

In an effort to create a meaningful and personal experience for you, enrollment for this institute is limited.  Applications are requested and admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. As we expect the Institute to reach capacity quickly, applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible.  All applications must be submitted by June 1, 2018 for consideration.  Participants will be notified of application decisions not later than June 29, 2018.

Participants should plan to arrive by Sunday, October 14 at 11:00am and depart after the institute concludes on Tuesday, October 16 at 12:30 p.m.

Registration information will be provided with acceptance notifications.

Registration as a member is based on individual membership status. If you are employed by a college or university that is an institutional member, you can join as an individual member at the $75 rate. If your institution is NOT a member, then you will need to join at the associate affiliate rate of $242 and then you can pay the individual member rate for institute registration. This gives you the institute registration and a year of membership for less than the non-member registration fee. Visit the Membership section of the NASPA website to learn about membership types.

Scholarships Available

NASPA is able to offer a limited number of scholarships to applicants who would otherwise be unable to attend the Institute.  Each scholarship of $375.00 will be applied to the accepted applicant's registration fee.  This amount covers the entire registration fee for NASPA members who register by the early bird registration deadline of August 24, 2018.
