Message from the Chair
On behalf of the NASPA Center for Women, I invite your engagement with our mission to amplify the voices, scholarship, and professional advancement of women in higher education. We are honored to continue this important work, building upon nearly a century of commitment to advancing women's leadership in higher education and addressing the unique challenges facing women educators and students.
Our Center serves as a vital resource and professional home for women in student affairs and higher education administration. We provide comprehensive support through research funding, networking opportunities, and collaboration with the Journal for Women and Gender in Higher Education. Through our Meaningful Mentorship series, we connect emerging and established professionals, fostering the next generation of women leaders. We also collaborate strategically with partner organizations to address critical issues affecting women's education and advancement.
The landscape of higher education continues to evolve, and the need for focused attention on women's professional development, scholarship, and advocacy remains as relevant today as it was when deans of women first organized over a century ago. Our Center stands ready to support your work, amplify your research, and provide community as you navigate your career in higher education.
I encourage you to explore the programs and resources we offer and to become an active participant in our community. Together, we can ensure that women's perspectives, scholarship, and leadership continue to shape the future of higher education. I am excited about serving as Board chair this year!
Professionally,
Rolanda Horn, PhD
Board Chair

History
In 2001, then NASPA Executive Director, Gwen Dungy drafted a proposal to create a Center for Scholarship, Research, and Professional Development for Women to honor the legacy of the National Association of Women in Education (NAWE).
NAWE was founded in 1915 as a professional association for deans of women (NADW) and evolved into an association addressing issues in higher education focused on the interests of women educators and students. As professional opportunities for women in education expanded, organizations for women began to lose ground. Such was the case with NAWE. In 2000, the association disbanded, transferring some of its programs to NASPA.
The NASPA Center for Women proposed to advance NAWE's work by addressing educational issues relevant to women in higher education. The mission for the Center was to "examine issues of concern to women in education, matters of policy development, and the design and implementation of relevant programs and services for women students." The Center was also envisioned as a professional home for women who are leaders in women's centers.
NASPA President Shannon Ellis championed the Center for Women proposal, and under her presidency, it was approved by the NASPA Board for implementation in 2001.
