Montana Collegiate Tobacco Prevention Initiative

Our History
For nearly 15 years, the Montana Collegiate Tobacco Prevention Initiative (MCTPI) has supported college and university efforts to reduce use and exposure to tobacco across the state. Through our grant, we provide training and technical assistance which helps campuses create a safe environment for year-round comprehensive education and prevention activities, cessation services and policy change. Use of Tobacco Use and Attitudes Survey (TUAS) data guides trainings and programs for MCTPI. Education focuses on chronic diseases, secondhand smoke, prevent tobacco use, create awareness of the current policy, and/or advocate for future policies to current students, faculty/staff, incoming students and parents.
Funded by the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MTUPP) and staffed by The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA, MCTPI has fourteen participating Montana Campuses including:

  • Carroll College (Helena)
  • Dawson Community College (Glendive)
  • Flathead Valley Community College (Kalispell)
  • Fort Peck Community College (Poplar and Wolf Point)
  • Helena College of Technology - University of Montana (Helena)
  • Miles Community College (Miles City)
  • Montana State University (Bozeman)
  • Montana State University Billings (Billings)
  • Montana State University Northern (Havre)
  • Montana Tech (Butte)
  • The University of Montana (Missoula)
  • Rocky Mountain College (Billings)
  • University of Montana Western (Dillon)
  • University of Providence (Great Falls)

In 2017 the grant expanded to a chronic disease prevention focus, in addition to tobacco prevention. MCTPI now engages in efforts addressing asthma, cancer control, cardiovascular health, diabetes, tobacco prevention, nutrition and physical activity. With the expansion, the MCTPI will continue to support trainings and technical assistance, campus and community partnerships, and educational programming as we work towards making our campuses a safer space for students to live, work, learn, and grow.

MCTPI Learning Community
The MCTPI utilizes an online system, MCTPI Learning Community, designed to help college and university prevention teams share resources, implement best practices, and learn from each other.  Any member of a Montana higher education organization can access professional development, resources, and strategies for collaborative problem solving through MCTPI Learning Community. This community allows for the breakdown of geographical barriers to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration.
