The 2016 New Professionals Institute provides dedicated and purposeful time to consider how the significant world and national events of the recent past shape  opportunities and challenges for higher education and the role of a new Student Affairs professional into the near future.

About

The focus of the institute will be on capacity and connection - professional and personal - and the intersections of both in regard to transition(s), current impact, and future planning.

Expected learning outcomes of the NPI are:

  1. Gain insight about what it means to be a new Student Affairs professional in this transitional time and place in higher education.
  2. Develop personal and professional capacity in regard to:
    1. Mindfulness as a resource or tool;
    2. Life mapping for near future;
    3. Responding to institutional context and expectations, including defining work, making professional connections, and engaging relationships;
    4. Considering relationship of self to current higher education issues challenges, and opportunities – and the relationship of issues to the on the ground experience with and obligation to students as they engage learning, experience, belonging, justice, and persistence.;
    5. Development of financial literacy for the present and future,
    6. Understanding of potential for mentoring and sponsorship;
    7. Realizing opportunities for networking and new friendships.
