2024 NASPA Western Regional Conference

Regional Annual Conferences Student Success Region V Region VI Mid-Level

Presented By

Region V
Region VI

Welcome to the 2023 WRC!

Dear NASPA Western Regional Conference Attendees,

We are thrilled to welcome you to this year's conference at the JW Marriott in Las Vegas, NV, on behalf of the NASPA Western Regional Conference Committee. As we gather this year to recalibrate our purposes and practices, we are filled with great pride and gratitude for the many colleagues who sustained and allowed our institutions to continue to educate our students during the pandemic. This year's conference theme is "Illuminating Purpose, Practice, and Pride."

Over the past few years, we have grappled with the impact of several pandemics, including COVID-19 and racism. We have faced the challenge of trying to be together in community when the pandemic necessitated us being apart. We have been disappointed by how the United States and our institutions have approached the societal impacts of racism on communities of color. We are at a crossroads, as many of our colleagues are either leaving the profession or moving to different institutions that align with their values. Therefore, it is time for us to get clear about our why.

Our work and professional practices must be grounded in evidence-based practices, peer-reviewed research and literature, and the lived experiences of our campus constituents. We cannot simply throw spaghetti at the wall and hope it will stick. We must be deliberate and intentional in our approaches and practices to effect change and deliver on the outcomes of our work.

We want to express our gratitude and appreciation for the positive contributions made by colleagues all over our regions, both large and small. While we recognize that this work is not about us or the need for a gold star, it is essential to know if our work is transformational and impactful to students who access our programs and services. We have so much to be proud of and to have pride in. We are excited to recognize our colleagues.

We are excited to be in community with you all, and we hope this conference provides the space to nourish your heart, mind, and soul.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Transportation

Ride Share

Ridesharing, commonly associated with Uber and Lyft, is a convenient option for visitors to get around the destination, no matter where you are in Las Vegas. It’s as simple as downloading the rideshare app of your choice, inputting some information, and waiting for your ride to show up.

Taxi

Taxis are a reliable form of transportation used throughout Vegas for decades. With several companies to choose from, you never have to worry about there not being enough drivers at a late hour. Unlike other cities, you cannot hail a taxi on the street in Las Vegas. Taxis are required to pick up passengers at a physical address, such as a hotel taxi line. Hotels have specific areas for taxi pick-up, usually near the valet or main entrance.

Participants will get to meet and learn from various professionals in the field. From leading authentically to how to navigate the journey of higher education, the Graduate Student Institute is designed to support and prepare you for your trajectory in student affairs and higher education.

New Professionals Institute

The New Professional experience is an important and influential time in our Student Affairs journey; however, transforming lessons and experiences from graduate programs and/or prior roles into leadership foundations for higher education requires intentionality. From thinking about challenges facing leaders in Student Affairs to planning your professional pathways, the New Professionals Institute (NPI) is designed to support your journey through the profession.

Mid-Level Institute
Mid-Level professionals are some of the most influential people in Student Affairs. Across numerous institutions of higher education and in various positions, these professionals help to bring the mission and vision of their institutions to life. These workshops will take a strengths-based, collaborative approach to address the following issues of the mid-level professional experience:

  • Managing our wellness (avoiding burnout in diverse environments)
  • Managing our people (influencing down and up)
  • Managing our programs (grappling with the difficulty of assessing student affairs work)
  • Managing our futures (workshopping the direction we need to head in and what’s needed to get there)

You’ll have the opportunity to learn from leaders in the field, including each other, as we grapple with the challenges of middle management in higher education. We hope you'll leave feeling refreshed, energized, and proud of your work!

Community College Institute

The CCI is a pre-conference workshop that allows staff and faculty to learn from and engage with one another on a variety of critical issues affecting student affairs professionals in the community college setting.
