Region VI encompasses Arizona, California, Guahan (Guam), and Hawai'i.

About Region VI

Region VI logo
The guiding light centered above the I, radiating out represents our leadership within the region and the organization as a whole. The six flags converge around the guiding light, representing the way we come together as a community and lift each other, but also promote self-reflection. The outer edges of the flags represent the motion of our members – taking action, connecting around the globe, collaborating across geographical locations. The flags combined resemble a figure with its arms spread wide, welcoming any and all to Region VI.

Meet Our Regional Director

Dr. Derek Vergara has dedicated 39 years to higher education, specializing in student affairs and leadership. He earned his B.A. in Social Work and M.A. in Social Science with an emphasis on College Student Development from Azusa Pacific University, followed by a Doctorate in Education with a focus on Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. His dissertation explored freshman-year persistence among first-generation and non-first-generation college students.

As Dean of Students at Orange Coast College, Dr. Vergara responsibilities included oversight of key student services areas including, but not limited to, medical and mental health services, accessibility support services, student conduct, student life and leadership, housing and residential education, veteran resources, Title IX, behavioral intervention, and assessment coordination. He has held various leadership roles in both 2-year and 4-year institutions such as served as Fullerton College, University of California, Riverside, University of California, Irvine, Pepperdine University, Concordia University Irvine, and University of La Verne.

Dr. Vergara has taught undergraduate courses at Citrus College and the University of La Verne. He also taught in the master’s program in Counseling and Student Development at Azusa Pacific University and in the School of Education and Organizational Leadership doctoral program at Brandman University. In 1999, The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article highlighting his research and program, the First-Generation Student Success Program, at the University of La Verne. This recognition led to an opportunity in 2006 to contribute a chapter to the book Ethnicity Matters: Rethinking How Black, Hispanic, & Indian Students Prepare for & Succeed in College. His chapter, First-Generation Student Success Program: Latino/a Students and Families Working Together, garnered significant attention, leading to invitations to present his research and program at several conferences, including NCORE, ACPA, and AAC&U. Dr. Vergara’s grant writing raised an estimated amount of 1.8 million dollars aided in his research and programmatic work on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Dr. Vergara has served on numerous committees and advisory boards throughout his career in student affairs. He has been actively involved with NASPA Region VI, serving on the Advisory Board as the Small Colleges Division Representative and the Community College Division Representative, as well as representing the region on the NASPA National Board for the Community Colleges Division. Along with being selected as a recipient of the NASPA Pillar of the Profession award, Dr. Vergara is honored to serve as the Region VI Director for the 2006-2008 term.

As a first-generation college student, and son of migrant workers, Dr. Vergara’s values of service, hard work, and dedication come from his parents and family who worked tirelessly as field workers in the pineapple fields on the island of Lana’i, Hawai’i.

Dr. Vergara enjoys spending quality time with his family (Michelle and Jared) and good friends, drinking excellent wine, stand-up paddleboarding, and watching the sunset at the beach.

KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITIES

Welcome to the Region VI Knowledge Communities (KCs), your gateway to the profession and connection to the association. As the slogan suggests, the KCs are the entry point to NASPA for graduate students or professionals wanting to get involved and take on a leadership role. KC Representatives are also included in the region's KC advisory board to give a collective voice of the association.

There are currently 44 KCs ranging in topics and specific issues currently facing our field. These active communities help to identify and share emerging knowledge and best practices. Each KC can have up to two regional representatives and as many sub-committee representatives as necessary.

Within the Region VI KCs there are a number of ways to get involved:

  • Become a Regional Representative for one of our many Knowledge Communities.
  • Serve on a committee or be an active member of a KC.
  • Click one or more of the KCs on your NASPA profile page and receive emails about upcoming events, or provide input into the programming or information provided by your KC representatives.
  • Attend ancillary meetings, have a KC sponsor a presentation, or write an article to our many NASPA publications.

We look forward to working with you!
