Message from the Chair
On behalf of the 2021 Planning committee, I am very honored to announce that the 2021 Western Regional Conference will be in San Francisco, CA, on Ohlone, Ramaytush, and Muwekma Ohlone land.
In November of 2021, We will be exploring the theme “Courageous and Resilient Leadership: Together We Rise”. We are experiencing a time like no other in our communities and on our campuses - where student affairs professionals at every level have been confronted with enormous challenges never imagined before, and we have responded with courage and resilience, oftentimes abruptly and with urgency. Our professional, social, political and personal worlds have collided and Higher Education as we know it has been changed forever. We have so many critical conversations to share.
My hope is that we are re-inspired and hopeful for a better future again in our space together in San Francisco. And finally after a year of countless event cancellations, we are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to gather together in person, to learn from each other, to celebrate the work we have done, and to be in community again. We will need to heal and reaffirm one another. Right now our work is greater and even more important! Let us come together to forge a better future for our profession, our students, and our campuses. WRC 2021 will provide us opportunities to reflect, recenter, and rediscover our purpose - Together We Rise.
NASPA family, Iʻll see you in San Francisco in 2021!

The theme of the 2021 NASPA Western Regional Conference is Courageous and Resilient Leadership: Together We Rise
The planning committee has select pre-conference sessions that will enrich and enhance your attendee experience.
Pre-conference sessions will be offered virtually and take two formats (two-day institutes and one-day institutes) and require participants to pre-register for a fee. Pre-conference sessions are designed as highly specialized opportunities to discuss a specific topic or program.
NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) Institute
Conferences can be an overwhelming process especially if you are an undergraduate student who is attending the conference as a first-timer. The NUFP institute allows a group of students with similar interests and passion in higher education to share their knowledge, experiences and create life-long relationships with their peers and student affairs professionals. The NUFP institute fosters a community for undergraduate fellows who are interested in student affairs by providing them with mentorship, navigational skills, as well as knowledge and tools from the professionals in the field.
If you are a NASPA Undergraduate Fellow, you won’t want to miss this virtual institute! The day-long institute will involve activities, panels, and opportunities to network with others in the student affairs community. Together we will explore what it means to be courageous and resilient leaders in an ever-changing world.
Institute Goals and Learning Outcomes:
- Increase their understanding about and activation of courage and resilient leadership skills
- Gain insights about the field of student affairs while exploring personal, academic, and career goals
- Rise together as a community while developing and practicing professional networking skills
Sarah Kutten, Ed.D.
Director of Student Services | University of Oregon, Portland
Student Life and Services Coordinator | Leeward Community College
Graduate Student Institute
NASPA's Western Regional Graduate Student Institute (GSI) is a pre-conference for those currently in graduate school. This institute will provide personal and professional development opportunities along with networking opportunities with members of the NASPA Region V and VI community. We will build a community that supports and challenges one another to be courageous, resilient, and grounded.
New Professional Institute
NASPA’s Western Regional New Professionals Institute is a professional development opportunity for those who are early in their Student Affairs journey. During this pre-conference event, participants will be able to reflect upon the impact of their strengths and identities within an organization, discuss trends in student affairs administration and positioning for purposeful growth, and learn about maintaining wellness as a new professional.
The New Professionals Institute is designed for student affairs professionals who have five or fewer years of full-time professional experience in various functional areas.
Rick Trevino, Ed.D.
Associate Director of First Year Advising | University of Southern California
Mid-Level professionals are some of the most influential forces on college and university campuses. In pivotal positions, they serve students directly while promoting the learning, growth, and development of their staff. As managers, they provide critical insight and perspective to senior administrators and bridge the gap between Academic and Student Affairs. The 2021 MLI will be designed as a space for critical reflection, where participants consider, explore, and review mid-level skills and competencies, emerging trends, and best practices while discussing job satisfaction and professional development.
The Mid-level Institute is intended for professionals with a minimum of five years full-time experience and supervisory, budget, and/or programming responsibilities for a department.
Anticipated topics include:*
- Creating authentic relationships across departments and divisions
- Leadership as practice
- Professional competencies at the Mid-Level
- Getting Involved local, regionally, and nationally
*Topics may also include participant identified needs and interests learned through pre-institute communications.
